Arm Wrestling with Vulnerability

Thank you for joining me in reflections of A Course in Miracles Revival.
Here is Lesson 26:

My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability.

It’s common in discussion groups engaged in philosophical and spiritual bantering that the following statement is offered:
I choose my thoughts.
At first, the statement elicits a variety of responses: a scrunched brow as if the person bit into a sour kumquat; or maybe a knowing nod in agreement; or an emphatic rejection that the statement has no basis in fact.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????When you read it or heard it, what did you do: ponder it? accept it? reject it?

For me, I notice my thoughts are tied to my mood. If I’m feeling creative, new ideas pop up and visit the canvas of my thinking. If I’m feeling anxious, worrisome thoughts tend to take up residence. I have a very good friend who is a professional worrier. If she doesn’t have a current problem to worry about, she’ll worry for other people’s problems. She really should charge for this service! She lives in a continuous state of alert and vigilance to be ready to address the dangers that lurk in the shadows.

But if we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll notice a similar pattern of thoughts from time to time. Sometimes it can feel like arm wrestling with an opponent of your own thoughts. See if you recognize any of these thought-opponents: the thoughts that undermine feeling at peace; the thoughts that hijack us into fear and rob us of our vitality; the nagging thoughts that carve out a groove in our minds leaving us feeling exhausted and vulnerable.

Recognizing this in myself and others I work with, reminds me that whatever thoughts I choose are sure to inform me of my orientation toward vulnerability or invulnerability.
